Sirius is the brightest star in the Earth's night sky and the fifth closest star system to our solar system. It is a binary star system, with two stars orbiting around a common center of mass. The main star, Sirius A, is a blue-white star that is more than twice as massive as the Sun and more than 20 times as bright. The smaller companion star, Sirius B, is a white dwarf that is less than one percent of the mass of the Sun. Sirius is located in the constellation Canis Major and is sometimes called the "Dog Star." It has been known to astronomers since ancient times and has played a significant role in the mythology and cultures of many civilizations. Sirius was also used by ancient cultures as a guide for agricultural and religious purposes.
